Narrative:
Cvg approach cleared us to 5000 ft. As we leveled off, the controller told us that he had amended our altitude to 6000 ft. I told him that we did not receive that clearance, and we had not. The controller said it was ok, but you never know.

Title: FLC OF B737-200 OVERSHOT ASSIGNED APCH ALT ON DSCNT DUE TO MISUNDERSTANDING OF CLRNC ALT.
Narrative: CVG APCH CLRED US TO 5000 FT. AS WE LEVELED OFF, THE CTLR TOLD US THAT HE HAD AMENDED OUR ALT TO 6000 FT. I TOLD HIM THAT WE DID NOT RECEIVE THAT CLRNC, AND WE HAD NOT. THE CTLR SAID IT WAS OK, BUT YOU NEVER KNOW.
