Narrative:

During a C182 chkout flight with a commercial pilot, the aircraft skidded off the runway and the aircraft broke a runway light. On the approach I cautioned the commercial pilot about his approach speed and he was unable to slow the aircraft down. The aircraft floated down the runway, possibly due to variable winds. Windsocks at opposite ends of the runway were favoring separate directions. Upon touching down he was unable to control the aircraft, at which point I took the controls. A go around did not seem advisable at that time. Maximum braking was applied and all occupants escaped uninjured. The runway used was downsloping.
