Narrative:
During descending left turn to intercept dab runway 7L localizer, received TCASII TA at 11 O'clock position, -500 ft which immediately became an RA. Observed high wing single engine aircraft as I commenced climbing right turn. Aircraft appeared to continue nose on and pass below and to our left. As we advised approach of our RA, he confirmed the 'pop up' traffic. Without TCASII, could have been much closer. Issue of uncontrolled aircraft in vicinity of approach corridors is tough to solve. Maybe dab could use a notch added on to its class C airspace.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD88 ON APCH TO DAB HAS A CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH A JUMP ACFT CLBING OUT ON THE FRINGE OF THE CLASS C AIRSPACE OF DAB, FL.
Narrative: DURING DSNDING L TURN TO INTERCEPT DAB RWY 7L LOC, RECEIVED TCASII TA AT 11 O'CLOCK POS, -500 FT WHICH IMMEDIATELY BECAME AN RA. OBSERVED HIGH WING SINGLE ENG ACFT AS I COMMENCED CLBING R TURN. ACFT APPEARED TO CONTINUE NOSE ON AND PASS BELOW AND TO OUR L. AS WE ADVISED APCH OF OUR RA, HE CONFIRMED THE 'POP UP' TFC. WITHOUT TCASII, COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH CLOSER. ISSUE OF UNCTLED ACFT IN VICINITY OF APCH CORRIDORS IS TOUGH TO SOLVE. MAYBE DAB COULD USE A NOTCH ADDED ON TO ITS CLASS C AIRSPACE.
