Narrative:

I departed airport to the south. At about 2000 ft engine lost power to idle. Unable to gain power. Put plane into safe glide and since at low altitude, turned into wind and looked for safe place to land and flaps and radioed emergency landing. Checked all fuel system. Tanks on both (takeoff position) fuel pump was on. Extended gear and full flaps for emergency landing. Turned off fuel and pumps, etc in cornfield. Rolled 130 ft about and whole gear collapsed coming to full stop. Departed aircraft unharmed. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: pilot on second flight of day. First flight was with instructor and that included emergency landing practice. Fuel was not topped off after first flight but was adequate. No previous history of fuel contamination problems at departure airport. Recent maintenance on vacuum pump. Engine rebuild found 1 cracked magneto case.
