Narrative:
Called for pwrback (taxi) clearance. Received clearance to pwrback and taxi taxiway B west. I assumed since this was a taxiway, that we wre cleared to taxi out via taxiway B, wbound for takeoff runway 6. As we were passing taxiway B toward taxiway a, ground said that we weren't cleared to taxi past taxiway B west. This taxiway B (west) designation is not on the airport diagram. This does not conform to normal taxi clearance terminology, in that taxiway B west is not a taxi point, but a taxiway -- we don't normally get taxi clearance to a taxiway, unless it is clearance to taxi via that taxiway, which is the way I read it. Incidentally, I called ground back after initial pwrback clearance for clarification about the taxi clearance, asking 'cleared to taxi B west?' all he said was 'affirmative, B west.' if they are going to use taxiway B west as a taxi clearance limit, it should be marked as a taxi point, and clearance should use that terminology.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF A DC9 FAILED TO STOP AT TAXI OUT CLRNC LIMIT DUE TO MISCOMMUNICATION BTWN THE CTLR AND THE FLC.
Narrative: CALLED FOR PWRBACK (TAXI) CLRNC. RECEIVED CLRNC TO PWRBACK AND TAXI TXWY B W. I ASSUMED SINCE THIS WAS A TXWY, THAT WE WRE CLRED TO TAXI OUT VIA TXWY B, WBOUND FOR TKOF RWY 6. AS WE WERE PASSING TXWY B TOWARD TXWY A, GND SAID THAT WE WEREN'T CLRED TO TAXI PAST TXWY B W. THIS TXWY B (W) DESIGNATION IS NOT ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM. THIS DOES NOT CONFORM TO NORMAL TAXI CLRNC TERMINOLOGY, IN THAT TXWY B W IS NOT A TAXI POINT, BUT A TXWY -- WE DON'T NORMALLY GET TAXI CLRNC TO A TXWY, UNLESS IT IS CLRNC TO TAXI VIA THAT TXWY, WHICH IS THE WAY I READ IT. INCIDENTALLY, I CALLED GND BACK AFTER INITIAL PWRBACK CLRNC FOR CLARIFICATION ABOUT THE TAXI CLRNC, ASKING 'CLRED TO TAXI B W?' ALL HE SAID WAS 'AFFIRMATIVE, B W.' IF THEY ARE GOING TO USE TXWY B W AS A TAXI CLRNC LIMIT, IT SHOULD BE MARKED AS A TAXI POINT, AND CLRNC SHOULD USE THAT TERMINOLOGY.
