Narrative:

This was an aircraft change from B757 to B767. This was the first time the first officer and I had been on a type X FMC aircraft. I had read the manual and pink bulletins on the type X and had all onboard the aircraft. The tight connect time made it difficult to fully review a system that was new to both of us. I also noted several messages on the flight plan dealing with the system. The first officer and I both felt we had studied the system, but still found hands on learning much more effective and had to reference the checklist numerous times. It was a day VFR flight and allowed the opportunity to do so, however, had WX been a factor, raw data flying would have been necessary. This is a major system change and needs to be treated as such. I feel my first officer and I were ahead of the system and yet we still learned things. On the line is often not a good time for on the job training unless known in advance, such as an IOE.
