Narrative:
Flying downwind north of airport at 6000 ft MSL approach controller asked us if we had runway 26 in sight, at houston. We said yes, and were given visual approach runway 26. First officer was flying the visual, we turned base, and I, the PNF, was reading approach checklist and calling the tower for landing instruction. By this time, I looked up out of the window, I saw that we passed runway 26, and were passing runway 27. Going south, the first officer forgot to de-select navigation/VOR localizer and switch to VOR/localizer to capture the localizer. The tower saw us heading south still on base leg and told us to go ahead and land on runway 27. We corrected our action by turing toward the airport (runway 27) and successfully made the landing with no conflict.

Narrative: FLYING DOWNWIND N OF ARPT AT 6000 FT MSL APCH CTLR ASKED US IF WE HAD RWY 26 IN SIGHT, AT HOUSTON. WE SAID YES, AND WERE GIVEN VISUAL APCH RWY 26. FO WAS FLYING THE VISUAL, WE TURNED BASE, AND I, THE PNF, WAS READING APCH CHKLIST AND CALLING THE TWR FOR LNDG INSTRUCTION. BY THIS TIME, I LOOKED UP OUT OF THE WINDOW, I SAW THAT WE PASSED RWY 26, AND WERE PASSING RWY 27. GOING S, THE FO FORGOT TO DE-SELECT NAV/VOR LOC AND SWITCH TO VOR/LOC TO CAPTURE THE LOC. THE TWR SAW US HEADING S STILL ON BASE LEG AND TOLD US TO GO AHEAD AND LAND ON RWY 27. WE CORRECTED OUR ACTION BY TURING TOWARD THE ARPT (RWY 27) AND SUCCESSFULLY MADE THE LNDG WITH NO CONFLICT.
