Narrative:

On approach to dtw, first officer flying. We were given a 240 degree heading to intercept to localizer to runway 21 at dtw. I was on dxo not the localizer frequency to get DME from airport. First officer was on the runway 21L localizer frequency. As I tuned to the localizer frequency I noticed we were past intercept. At that time ATC gave us another heading of 220 degrees and asked if we had a visual with the airport. I said 'no.' as I asked the first officer to intercept, ATC urgently asked if we were going to runway 21R instead of runway 21L. We turned back. Later asking why we did not intercept runway 21L localizer, my first officer said he heard the heading assignments but not the 'intercept' instructions. At my company we are to keep positional awareness which is why I was on the dxo VOR frequency and not the runway 21L localizer frequency. Good intentions don't pay off when missed communications happen.

Narrative: ON APCH TO DTW, FO FLYING. WE WERE GIVEN A 240 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT TO LOC TO RWY 21 AT DTW. I WAS ON DXO NOT THE LOC FREQ TO GET DME FROM ARPT. FO WAS ON THE RWY 21L LOC FREQ. AS I TUNED TO THE LOC FREQ I NOTICED WE WERE PAST INTERCEPT. AT THAT TIME ATC GAVE US ANOTHER HEADING OF 220 DEGS AND ASKED IF WE HAD A VISUAL WITH THE ARPT. I SAID 'NO.' AS I ASKED THE FO TO INTERCEPT, ATC URGENTLY ASKED IF WE WERE GOING TO RWY 21R INSTEAD OF RWY 21L. WE TURNED BACK. LATER ASKING WHY WE DID NOT INTERCEPT RWY 21L LOC, MY FO SAID HE HEARD THE HEADING ASSIGNMENTS BUT NOT THE 'INTERCEPT' INSTRUCTIONS. AT MY COMPANY WE ARE TO KEEP POSITIONAL AWARENESS WHICH IS WHY I WAS ON THE DXO VOR FREQ AND NOT THE RWY 21L LOC FREQ. GOOD INTENTIONS DON'T PAY OFF WHEN MISSED COMS HAPPEN.
