Narrative:
On heading 090 degrees and 4000 ft MSL, atl approach questioned our heading to intercept runway 9R localizer at atl. PNF responded last heading assigned was 090 degrees. Never given clearance to intercept. Then was issued 120 degree vector to intercept and cleared for approach. Not given intercept clearance caused us to overshoot localizer and heavy radio traffic delayed our query.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B727 ON VECTOR FLEW THROUGH LOC WHEN NOT CLRED FOR APCH. CTLR NOTICED AND CORRECTED VECTOR. GAVE APCH CLRNC. NO CONFLICT.
Narrative: ON HDG 090 DEGS AND 4000 FT MSL, ATL APCH QUESTIONED OUR HDG TO INTERCEPT RWY 9R LOC AT ATL. PNF RESPONDED LAST HDG ASSIGNED WAS 090 DEGS. NEVER GIVEN CLRNC TO INTERCEPT. THEN WAS ISSUED 120 DEG VECTOR TO INTERCEPT AND CLRED FOR APCH. NOT GIVEN INTERCEPT CLRNC CAUSED US TO OVERSHOOT LOC AND HVY RADIO TFC DELAYED OUR QUERY.
