Narrative:
Autospoiler deployed on touchdown. Handle came full aft and then it immediately retracted, full forward. The amber 'spoiler/flap extended' annunciator light illuminated. As it was the first officer's landing, it gave me a free hand to manually extend the spoilers. But it would only pull aft in the flight mode. Still above 100 KTS I moved the lever forward yet again and was able to rearm and manually deploy the spoilers in the 'ground' mode. In all the yrs I have flown the S80 I have never seen this anomaly. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the captain tracked this problem in the air carrier maintenance computer and found that it was deferred for 6 days. Maintenance replaced a number of items in the spoiler, speed brake system. Maintenance actions are listed in code in the computer. He was unfamiliar with the code so he was unable to tell what was done. This is the first problem of this kind he has seen in over 8 yrs on the aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD80 CREW HAD FLT AND GND SPOILERS MALFUNCTION, AND FAIL TO DEPLOY AUTOMATICALLY ON LNDG.
Narrative: AUTOSPOILER DEPLOYED ON TOUCHDOWN. HANDLE CAME FULL AFT AND THEN IT IMMEDIATELY RETRACTED, FULL FORWARD. THE AMBER 'SPOILER/FLAP EXTENDED' ANNUNCIATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED. AS IT WAS THE FO'S LNDG, IT GAVE ME A FREE HAND TO MANUALLY EXTEND THE SPOILERS. BUT IT WOULD ONLY PULL AFT IN THE FLT MODE. STILL ABOVE 100 KTS I MOVED THE LEVER FORWARD YET AGAIN AND WAS ABLE TO REARM AND MANUALLY DEPLOY THE SPOILERS IN THE 'GND' MODE. IN ALL THE YRS I HAVE FLOWN THE S80 I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS ANOMALY. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE CAPT TRACKED THIS PROB IN THE ACR MAINT COMPUTER AND FOUND THAT IT WAS DEFERRED FOR 6 DAYS. MAINT REPLACED A NUMBER OF ITEMS IN THE SPOILER, SPD BRAKE SYS. MAINT ACTIONS ARE LISTED IN CODE IN THE COMPUTER. HE WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH THE CODE SO HE WAS UNABLE TO TELL WHAT WAS DONE. THIS IS THE FIRST PROB OF THIS KIND HE HAS SEEN IN OVER 8 YRS ON THE ACFT.
