Narrative:
Flight attendant smelled smoke in the cabin and notified the captain. He returned from the cabin and instructed me to return immediately to new york (jfk). I began an immediate turn back to ny and started a descent. We notified departure of our actions and they vectored us back to kennedy. Supplemental information from acn 441081: when we removed the oxygen masks to use regular microphone, we could not. The activation of the quick donning masks deactivates the regular mikes. This appears to be a bad design for the ATR.
