Narrative:
We were sent from our abc base to work on what was reported to be an intermittent vibration problem with a JT8D engine on an air carrier airlines aircraft. The aircraft is a B727-200, ship number xyz. The exact write-up was 'after rotation #3 engine start lever vibrated severely and loudly. The #3 throttle was also vibrating to a lesser extend. This was followed by a call from the aft flight attendant stating a vibration could be felt and heard. After 45 seconds to 1 min the vibrations decreased. During climb the throttle was moved to idle and returned to climb power. Operation appeared normal and engine was scanned by the so on climb out. Maintenance was contacted and maintenance arranged. Remainder of flight engine operation normal.' upon our arrival into ZZZ we inspected the engine inlet and exhaust and no foreign object damage or any other discrepancy was found. We opened the engine and inspected the fuel control xover shaft, chip detector and all other engine components and once again found no discrepancies. We decided the engine was ok for service so we took it out for an engine run. We ran all 3 engines separately and at the same time in an attempt to compare throttle and cut off lever vibrations. We ran the affected motor at the takeoff power for 5 mins and found no vibrations out of the ordinary. We returned to the gate and shut down all engines. We then again started the #3 engine and still no discrepancy. Aircraft logbook was signed and aircraft released for service. We returned to abc. The aircraft departed tulsa on the morning of jun/xa/99, on a flight to salt lake city. En route the crew got a #3 engine oil filter bypass light. Their write-up was exactly, 'oil filter bypass light illuminated in-flight. All parameters indicated normal. Accomplished engine failure/precautionary shutdown procedure. Flight attendants noticed vibration in aft portion of airplane prior to shutdown.' the flight was diverted into XXX where the engine was replaced.
