Narrative:
We were level at FL180. The ZNY controller cleared us to 13000 ft and mentioned VFR traffic that had us in sight. I began the descent and almost immediately got a TCASII RA to climb. I initiated a climb and leveled off at FL183 when a 'clear of conflict' was given by the TCASII. I immediately reported what happened and what altitude we were now at to the center. He acknowledged us and we again began another descent -- this time without incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737-200 PERFORMS AN EVASIVE ACTION CLB WHEN VFR TFC IS TOO CLOSE FOR THE ASSIGNED DSCNT AS GIVEN BY ZNY, NY.
Narrative: WE WERE LEVEL AT FL180. THE ZNY CTLR CLRED US TO 13000 FT AND MENTIONED VFR TFC THAT HAD US IN SIGHT. I BEGAN THE DSCNT AND ALMOST IMMEDIATELY GOT A TCASII RA TO CLB. I INITIATED A CLB AND LEVELED OFF AT FL183 WHEN A 'CLR OF CONFLICT' WAS GIVEN BY THE TCASII. I IMMEDIATELY RPTED WHAT HAPPENED AND WHAT ALT WE WERE NOW AT TO THE CTR. HE ACKNOWLEDGED US AND WE AGAIN BEGAN ANOTHER DSCNT -- THIS TIME WITHOUT INCIDENT.
