Narrative:
While climbing to assigned altitude of 8000 ft, I became distracted by programming the GPS while within 1000 ft of assigned altitude. While distracted, I climbed through 8000-8500 ft. I noticed the altitude and immediately descended to 8000 ft. Reoccurrence will be prevented by adhering to my own rule of not doing any unnecessary tasks while within 1000 ft of an assigned altitude -- climbing or descending.

Narrative: WHILE CLBING TO ASSIGNED ALT OF 8000 FT, I BECAME DISTRACTED BY PROGRAMMING THE GPS WHILE WITHIN 1000 FT OF ASSIGNED ALT. WHILE DISTRACTED, I CLBED THROUGH 8000-8500 FT. I NOTICED THE ALT AND IMMEDIATELY DSNDED TO 8000 FT. REOCCURRENCE WILL BE PREVENTED BY ADHERING TO MY OWN RULE OF NOT DOING ANY UNNECESSARY TASKS WHILE WITHIN 1000 FT OF AN ASSIGNED ALT -- CLBING OR DSNDING.
