Narrative:
Taxiing out at sav (savannah, GA) utilizing taxiway A1 to hold short of approach end of runway 18. One controller working ground and tower. Airport utilizing runways 36 and 9 for takeoff and landing. An aircraft had just departed runway 36 and another aircraft Y was cleared into position and hold runway 36. We (X) were then cleared to taxi across the runway at the departure end of runway 36. We had applied power to taxi uphill and across the runway. The tower then cleared the aircraft (Y) for takeoff before we could cross! The tower/ground then told us to hold short as our nose crossed the hold short line. I had already reduced power to idle when I heard the other aircraft receive takeoff clearance and immediately applied brakes to stop short of the runway but across the hold short line. The sudden stop may have caused minor injury to 2 flight attendants. After the departing aircraft was airborne, we reclarified with ground/tower that he had originally cleared us to cross and he admitted that he had. We were reclred to cross and after communicating with the flight attendants and passenger we continued the flight uneventfully. It is important to emphasize how cautious we should be when a controller is overloaded and intersecting runways/taxiway closures are in effect.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SAV CLRS ACFT INTO POS AND HOLD, CLRING B757 TO CROSS RWY AT DEP END. CTLR CLRS ACFT FOR TKOF PRIOR TO B757 XING. B757, XING HOLD SHORT LINE, MAKES IMMEDIATE BRAKE MANEUVER.
Narrative: TAXIING OUT AT SAV (SAVANNAH, GA) UTILIZING TXWY A1 TO HOLD SHORT OF APCH END OF RWY 18. ONE CTLR WORKING GND AND TWR. ARPT UTILIZING RWYS 36 AND 9 FOR TKOF AND LNDG. AN ACFT HAD JUST DEPARTED RWY 36 AND ANOTHER ACFT Y WAS CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD RWY 36. WE (X) WERE THEN CLRED TO TAXI ACROSS THE RWY AT THE DEP END OF RWY 36. WE HAD APPLIED PWR TO TAXI UPHILL AND ACROSS THE RWY. THE TWR THEN CLRED THE ACFT (Y) FOR TKOF BEFORE WE COULD CROSS! THE TWR/GND THEN TOLD US TO HOLD SHORT AS OUR NOSE CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE. I HAD ALREADY REDUCED PWR TO IDLE WHEN I HEARD THE OTHER ACFT RECEIVE TKOF CLRNC AND IMMEDIATELY APPLIED BRAKES TO STOP SHORT OF THE RWY BUT ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE. THE SUDDEN STOP MAY HAVE CAUSED MINOR INJURY TO 2 FLT ATTENDANTS. AFTER THE DEPARTING ACFT WAS AIRBORNE, WE RECLARIFIED WITH GND/TWR THAT HE HAD ORIGINALLY CLRED US TO CROSS AND HE ADMITTED THAT HE HAD. WE WERE RECLRED TO CROSS AND AFTER COMMUNICATING WITH THE FLT ATTENDANTS AND PAX WE CONTINUED THE FLT UNEVENTFULLY. IT IS IMPORTANT TO EMPHASIZE HOW CAUTIOUS WE SHOULD BE WHEN A CTLR IS OVERLOADED AND INTERSECTING RWYS/TXWY CLOSURES ARE IN EFFECT.
