Narrative:
Before takeoff controller assigned us 3000 ft and a turn to 020. After takeoff climbing through 1500 controller asked if we had started the turn. I replied turning now, however, I turned to 200. About 30 seconds later he asked me to confirm my heading. I realized the error and corrected to 020. There was some confusion on the ground at gary about whether we had been released for takeoff. After about 3-5 mins I called back and said we were still waiting for release. Controller said we had been released. I think he should have added the heading to the request for the turn during the climb. But, I still turned the wrong way.

Narrative: BEFORE TKOF CTLR ASSIGNED US 3000 FT AND A TURN TO 020. AFTER TKOF CLBING THROUGH 1500 CTLR ASKED IF WE HAD STARTED THE TURN. I REPLIED TURNING NOW, HOWEVER, I TURNED TO 200. ABOUT 30 SECONDS LATER HE ASKED ME TO CONFIRM MY HDG. I REALIZED THE ERROR AND CORRECTED TO 020. THERE WAS SOME CONFUSION ON THE GND AT GARY ABOUT WHETHER WE HAD BEEN RELEASED FOR TKOF. AFTER ABOUT 3-5 MINS I CALLED BACK AND SAID WE WERE STILL WAITING FOR RELEASE. CTLR SAID WE HAD BEEN RELEASED. I THINK HE SHOULD HAVE ADDED THE HDG TO THE REQUEST FOR THE TURN DURING THE CLB. BUT, I STILL TURNED THE WRONG WAY.
