Narrative:
Climbing through FL310 we observed in the cockpit and was advised of smoke in the cabin. Appropriate procedures were followed and the smoke diminished when the right air conditioning system was shut down. Contacted dispatch and maintenance and we agreed to return to ewr.

Title: SMOKE IN CABIN AND COCKPIT CAUSED RETURN TO DEP STATION AFTER AIR CONDITIONING UNIT IS SHUT DOWN.
Narrative: CLBING THROUGH FL310 WE OBSERVED IN THE COCKPIT AND WAS ADVISED OF SMOKE IN THE CABIN. APPROPRIATE PROCS WERE FOLLOWED AND THE SMOKE DIMINISHED WHEN THE R AIR CONDITIONING SYS WAS SHUT DOWN. CONTACTED DISPATCH AND MAINT AND WE AGREED TO RETURN TO EWR.
