Narrative:
Maintenance release had #3 fueling gauge and #3 forward boost pump inoperative. Upon arrival hnl, so went in to clarify the fuel gauge as being inaccurate. Maintenance said the write-up and deferral were in error and that aircraft could not be dispatched with fuel gauge and boost pump inoperative in same tank. The confusion was whether or not it was the fuel gauge inoperative or the #3 cockpit gauge.

Title: B747 CREW HAD IMPROPERLY DEFERRED MULTIPLE MEL ITEM.
Narrative: MAINT RELEASE HAD #3 FUELING GAUGE AND #3 FORWARD BOOST PUMP INOP. UPON ARR HNL, SO WENT IN TO CLARIFY THE FUEL GAUGE AS BEING INACCURATE. MAINT SAID THE WRITE-UP AND DEFERRAL WERE IN ERROR AND THAT ACFT COULD NOT BE DISPATCHED WITH FUEL GAUGE AND BOOST PUMP INOP IN SAME TANK. THE CONFUSION WAS WHETHER OR NOT IT WAS THE FUEL GAUGE INOP OR THE #3 COCKPIT GAUGE.
