Narrative:

We were cleared for takeoff on runway 4R with instructions to turn right to 130 degree heading/climb to 3000 ft. We were issued no TA's. At 400 ft AGL I reached up to select the heading and spotted a helicopter at 1 O'clock position and less than 1/4 mi at approximately 500 ft AGL on a parallel course. We delayed our turn until past and above the helicopter. We received no TCASII traffic display. Had I not seen the helicopter and had we initiated our turn at the normal altitude I am certain we would have collided with the helicopter.
