Narrative:
Just before touchdown, first officer pointed out we did not have landing clearance as approach had not handed us off to tower. I was flying and considered a go around, but the runway was clear, so I elected to land. We switched to tower frequency during rollout and they told us to turn left at the end and taxi to the gate. They said nothing to us about the incident, of course they could have cleared us to land without us knowing. It was pretty dumb on my part. I always turn the outboard landing lights on when we get landing (or takeoff) clearance. But this time for some reason I forgot to check. Fortunately the situation didn't turn out worse.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B727 LANDS MMUN WITHOUT LNDG CLRNC.
Narrative: JUST BEFORE TOUCHDOWN, FO POINTED OUT WE DID NOT HAVE LNDG CLRNC AS APCH HAD NOT HANDED US OFF TO TWR. I WAS FLYING AND CONSIDERED A GAR, BUT THE RWY WAS CLR, SO I ELECTED TO LAND. WE SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ DURING ROLLOUT AND THEY TOLD US TO TURN L AT THE END AND TAXI TO THE GATE. THEY SAID NOTHING TO US ABOUT THE INCIDENT, OF COURSE THEY COULD HAVE CLRED US TO LAND WITHOUT US KNOWING. IT WAS PRETTY DUMB ON MY PART. I ALWAYS TURN THE OUTBOARD LNDG LIGHTS ON WHEN WE GET LNDG (OR TKOF) CLRNC. BUT THIS TIME FOR SOME REASON I FORGOT TO CHK. FORTUNATELY THE SIT DIDN'T TURN OUT WORSE.
