Narrative:
I was cleared for takeoff on runway 30. As I was taxiing to the runway for takeoff, I understood the tower to advise me of a C150 on final. Thinking he was advising me to expedite my takeoff, I responded that I would continue rolling and not stop before takeoff. As I crossed the hold bars, the controller told me to clear the runway and he told the C150 to go around. He then admonished me for not complying with a hold instruction. He then cleared me for takeoff and I apologized to him for the misunderstanding. Apparently the controller's communication about the C150 contained a hold instruction which I failed to comprehend. I believe this type of conflict could have been avoided if the controller's instruction was simply 'hold, cancel takeoff clearance' and after acknowledgement by the pilot and compliance was observed, then an explanation (if necessary) of the hold could be given. Pilots are sensitive to certain key phrases like 'hold, cancel takeoff clearance' and I believe I would have complied immediately to such an instruction.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NEARING THE RWY AT CYS ARPT, PLT IN BE35 BELIEVED THE TWR WANTED HIM TO MAKE AN IMMEDIATE DEP BECAUSE THE CTLR ADVISED A C150 WAS ON FINAL.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 30. AS I WAS TAXIING TO THE RWY FOR TKOF, I UNDERSTOOD THE TWR TO ADVISE ME OF A C150 ON FINAL. THINKING HE WAS ADVISING ME TO EXPEDITE MY TKOF, I RESPONDED THAT I WOULD CONTINUE ROLLING AND NOT STOP BEFORE TKOF. AS I CROSSED THE HOLD BARS, THE CTLR TOLD ME TO CLR THE RWY AND HE TOLD THE C150 TO GO AROUND. HE THEN ADMONISHED ME FOR NOT COMPLYING WITH A HOLD INSTRUCTION. HE THEN CLRED ME FOR TKOF AND I APOLOGIZED TO HIM FOR THE MISUNDERSTANDING. APPARENTLY THE CTLR'S COM ABOUT THE C150 CONTAINED A HOLD INSTRUCTION WHICH I FAILED TO COMPREHEND. I BELIEVE THIS TYPE OF CONFLICT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THE CTLR'S INSTRUCTION WAS SIMPLY 'HOLD, CANCEL TKOF CLRNC' AND AFTER ACKNOWLEDGEMENT BY THE PLT AND COMPLIANCE WAS OBSERVED, THEN AN EXPLANATION (IF NECESSARY) OF THE HOLD COULD BE GIVEN. PLTS ARE SENSITIVE TO CERTAIN KEY PHRASES LIKE 'HOLD, CANCEL TKOF CLRNC' AND I BELIEVE I WOULD HAVE COMPLIED IMMEDIATELY TO SUCH AN INSTRUCTION.
