VFR reposition from flo to sms. In radar contact with shaw approach, until 5 mi north of sms when shaw approach called sms position and distance and handoff to sms airport unicom. Pilot observed shaw AFB on extended final to runway (generally south to north). No further contact with shaw approach and no conflict with any other aircraft. Momentary confusion on location of shaw AFB while on extended final.
