Narrative:
Inbound to jfk, we were initially assigned runway 4R and given a vector for that runway. We were level at 3000 ft. The controller then changed our runway to runway 4L and gave us a TA. We were unable to see the traffic and ATC said he was going to the parallel runway. He then cleared us for the visual approach to runway 4L. We started descending from 3000 ft. The controller gave us another TA and I called the traffic in sight. The traffic (DC8) was at our altitude and on a converging course. (We began to climb from 1800 ft to avoid the traffic.) the controller then asked our altitude and we advised 1800 ft. He said 'start a climb to 3000 ft' and stated we were not cleared for the visual. I said our last instructions were 'cleared for the visual runway 4L.' after the traffic passed, we were again cleared for the visual runway 4L. We landed without further incident. I believe the controller mistakenly cleared us for the visual and forgot about our runway change. Had we been on the original runway assignment, this might not have occurred.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A JETSTREAM 41 FLC READ BACK AND STARTED TO FLY A CLRNC THAT THE APCH CTLR CLAIMED NEVER TO HAVE ISSUED NEAR JFK.
Narrative: INBOUND TO JFK, WE WERE INITIALLY ASSIGNED RWY 4R AND GIVEN A VECTOR FOR THAT RWY. WE WERE LEVEL AT 3000 FT. THE CTLR THEN CHANGED OUR RWY TO RWY 4L AND GAVE US A TA. WE WERE UNABLE TO SEE THE TFC AND ATC SAID HE WAS GOING TO THE PARALLEL RWY. HE THEN CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 4L. WE STARTED DSNDING FROM 3000 FT. THE CTLR GAVE US ANOTHER TA AND I CALLED THE TFC IN SIGHT. THE TFC (DC8) WAS AT OUR ALT AND ON A CONVERGING COURSE. (WE BEGAN TO CLB FROM 1800 FT TO AVOID THE TFC.) THE CTLR THEN ASKED OUR ALT AND WE ADVISED 1800 FT. HE SAID 'START A CLB TO 3000 FT' AND STATED WE WERE NOT CLRED FOR THE VISUAL. I SAID OUR LAST INSTRUCTIONS WERE 'CLRED FOR THE VISUAL RWY 4L.' AFTER THE TFC PASSED, WE WERE AGAIN CLRED FOR THE VISUAL RWY 4L. WE LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. I BELIEVE THE CTLR MISTAKENLY CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL AND FORGOT ABOUT OUR RWY CHANGE. HAD WE BEEN ON THE ORIGINAL RWY ASSIGNMENT, THIS MIGHT NOT HAVE OCCURRED.
