Narrative:
Descending into lga airport on the kayoh 4 arrival, I was giving a friend of the captain's flight instruction in the lear. We should have taken him out of pilot's seat earlier, as in the process I missed a turn on the STAR and the captain (who was in the jump seat) missed the turn also. ATC also kept us on center too long, as the turn on the STAR was at the point where ZLA turns us over to socal. Center didn't give us a switchover and socal needed to get a hold of us to let us know we missed the turn. Separation was provided at all times, but socal had to move aircraft out of our way till they re-established communications with us. Had both the captain and I been flying together earlier and put the private pilot in the back, we would have caught the turn as we both are high time capts.

Title: UNQUALIFIED PERSON IN PLT SEAT MISSES TURN ON STAR ARR INTO LGB. LEAR 35.
Narrative: DSNDING INTO LGA ARPT ON THE KAYOH 4 ARR, I WAS GIVING A FRIEND OF THE CAPT'S FLT INSTRUCTION IN THE LEAR. WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN HIM OUT OF PLT'S SEAT EARLIER, AS IN THE PROCESS I MISSED A TURN ON THE STAR AND THE CAPT (WHO WAS IN THE JUMP SEAT) MISSED THE TURN ALSO. ATC ALSO KEPT US ON CTR TOO LONG, AS THE TURN ON THE STAR WAS AT THE POINT WHERE ZLA TURNS US OVER TO SOCAL. CTR DIDN'T GIVE US A SWITCHOVER AND SOCAL NEEDED TO GET A HOLD OF US TO LET US KNOW WE MISSED THE TURN. SEPARATION WAS PROVIDED AT ALL TIMES, BUT SOCAL HAD TO MOVE ACFT OUT OF OUR WAY TILL THEY RE-ESTABLISHED COMS WITH US. HAD BOTH THE CAPT AND I BEEN FLYING TOGETHER EARLIER AND PUT THE PVT PLT IN THE BACK, WE WOULD HAVE CAUGHT THE TURN AS WE BOTH ARE HIGH TIME CAPTS.
