Narrative:

We were on a left base for runway 17C at dfw. Approach told us to resume our own navigation to runway 17C but maintain 4000 ft. There was traffic passing from right to left below us at 3000 ft on final to runway 17L. We reported the traffic in sight and approach deleted our altitude restr, cleared us for the visual approach to runway 17C, and asked us to keep our speed up. First officer was flying. He was new in the aircraft and I was helping him to slow down, and get down. As I looked up it appeared he was turning in too soon for runway 17C and in fact we had runway 17L in sight. As I helped him maneuver for runway 17C approach called and said we were lining up on runway 17L and we needed to turn right and join the final for runway 17C. We were descending on top of the aircraft below us on final for runway 17L. TCASII showed us 700 ft above that aircraft as we turned away. Things get really busy when flying in busy airspace, with a new first officer, your performing non-flying duties, and helping the first officer configure and fly the aircraft.

Title: E145 CREW HAD LESS THAN LEGAL SEPARATION ON APCH AT DFW.

Narrative: WE WERE ON A L BASE FOR RWY 17C AT DFW. APCH TOLD US TO RESUME OUR OWN NAV TO RWY 17C BUT MAINTAIN 4000 FT. THERE WAS TFC PASSING FROM R TO L BELOW US AT 3000 FT ON FINAL TO RWY 17L. WE RPTED THE TFC IN SIGHT AND APCH DELETED OUR ALT RESTR, CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 17C, AND ASKED US TO KEEP OUR SPD UP. FO WAS FLYING. HE WAS NEW IN THE ACFT AND I WAS HELPING HIM TO SLOW DOWN, AND GET DOWN. AS I LOOKED UP IT APPEARED HE WAS TURNING IN TOO SOON FOR RWY 17C AND IN FACT WE HAD RWY 17L IN SIGHT. AS I HELPED HIM MANEUVER FOR RWY 17C APCH CALLED AND SAID WE WERE LINING UP ON RWY 17L AND WE NEEDED TO TURN R AND JOIN THE FINAL FOR RWY 17C. WE WERE DSNDING ON TOP OF THE ACFT BELOW US ON FINAL FOR RWY 17L. TCASII SHOWED US 700 FT ABOVE THAT ACFT AS WE TURNED AWAY. THINGS GET REALLY BUSY WHEN FLYING IN BUSY AIRSPACE, WITH A NEW FO, YOUR PERFORMING NON-FLYING DUTIES, AND HELPING THE FO CONFIGURE AND FLY THE ACFT.
