Narrative:

Cruising FL310, ZTL told us to fly heading 270 degrees which was a 50 degree left turn from our on course heading. Shortly thereafter, ZTL asked us our heading, which was passing 310 degrees. At that moment, we received a TCASII alert to descend approximately 2000 FPM to avoid head-on traffic.
