Narrative:

We were initially cleared for the dudes 9 departure, maintain 11000 ft and departure on 127.4. When we were cleared for takeoff, the altitude was amended to 2000 ft MSL. At 400 ft AGL, we started a turn to 120 degrees. The tower pointed out traffic at 11 O'clock and 3000 ft. It took about 1 min to locate the traffic and reported it to the tower. They then handed us off to departure. At that point we were leveling off, accelerating, bringing the flaps up, and maintaining contact with the traffic. Insuring the leveloff was completed. I called departure control at the same time the captain reported a problem with the FMS indications. After about 2 mins, I requested higher altitude because it did not seem right to stay this low. There was no response from departure control. I called the tower frequency. They said departure was trying to contact us and to use frequency 127.4. We contacted departure control, received vectors and higher altitude. No further incident. The distraction of traffic, a low altitude leveloff, and a minor malfunction caused the error in setting departure control frequency not be detected. More diligence in setting the frequencys and to insure a response is received when you check in with a new facility.

Title: DC10 CREW SELECTS WRONG FREQ AMIDST DEP CONFUSION.

Narrative: WE WERE INITIALLY CLRED FOR THE DUDES 9 DEP, MAINTAIN 11000 FT AND DEP ON 127.4. WHEN WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF, THE ALT WAS AMENDED TO 2000 FT MSL. AT 400 FT AGL, WE STARTED A TURN TO 120 DEGS. THE TWR POINTED OUT TFC AT 11 O'CLOCK AND 3000 FT. IT TOOK ABOUT 1 MIN TO LOCATE THE TFC AND RPTED IT TO THE TWR. THEY THEN HANDED US OFF TO DEP. AT THAT POINT WE WERE LEVELING OFF, ACCELERATING, BRINGING THE FLAPS UP, AND MAINTAINING CONTACT WITH THE TFC. INSURING THE LEVELOFF WAS COMPLETED. I CALLED DEP CTL AT THE SAME TIME THE CAPT RPTED A PROB WITH THE FMS INDICATIONS. AFTER ABOUT 2 MINS, I REQUESTED HIGHER ALT BECAUSE IT DID NOT SEEM RIGHT TO STAY THIS LOW. THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FROM DEP CTL. I CALLED THE TWR FREQ. THEY SAID DEP WAS TRYING TO CONTACT US AND TO USE FREQ 127.4. WE CONTACTED DEP CTL, RECEIVED VECTORS AND HIGHER ALT. NO FURTHER INCIDENT. THE DISTR OF TFC, A LOW ALT LEVELOFF, AND A MINOR MALFUNCTION CAUSED THE ERROR IN SETTING DEP CTL FREQ NOT BE DETECTED. MORE DILIGENCE IN SETTING THE FREQS AND TO INSURE A RESPONSE IS RECEIVED WHEN YOU CHK IN WITH A NEW FACILITY.
