Narrative:
I took off from olympia to do pattern work (touch and goes). Tower told me to follow another aircraft. I was to be #2 and the other aircraft #1. The other aircraft took a long run past the airport so I turned in front of it without remembering I was supposed to follow the aircraft. I did not come close to the aircraft. Tower noted it and told me I had cut off the plane and that I was supposed to be #2. I asked 'what do you want me to do' and he said 'now you are #1 and the other aircraft is #2.' he asked the other aircraft if it could see me. They confirmed that they had me in sight. Nothing further was said. I was distracted on takeoff by a malfunctioning tachometer.
