Narrative:
I was the captain of flight X on sep/xa/99, the first officer was at the controls. We were cleared for a visual approach to runway 27L at atl following a B757 with approximately 3.5 NM in trail. Approach control gave a recommended speed of 170 KTS at 4000 ft. We were then advised by ATC, 'aircraft X change in plan, turn right 360 degrees.' moments later we noticed traffic (MD88) on final for runway 26R, visually, and on TCASII to our right descending on GS through 4600 ft, followed by a TA, at which point we descended to 3000 ft. The MD88 flew directly overhead at approximately 4200 ft. ZTL came on the radio and said, 'aircraft X, I think you're following the wrong aircraft.' at which time I advised we were 'told to fly a 360 degree heading.' ATC came back and said, 'I think I got the wrong call sign,' and apologized. We were then vectored back around for another approach to runway 27L. Atl approach and tower were called when I got to the gate.

Title: AN OPERROR OCCURS WHEN THE ATL APCH CTLR GIVES A CLRNC USING THE WRONG CALL SIGN AND THE CORRECTLY RESPONDING ACFT TURNS IN FRONT OF ANOTHER MD88 ON APCH TO ATL, GA.
Narrative: I WAS THE CAPT OF FLT X ON SEP/XA/99, THE FO WAS AT THE CTLS. WE WERE CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 27L AT ATL FOLLOWING A B757 WITH APPROX 3.5 NM IN TRAIL. APCH CTL GAVE A RECOMMENDED SPD OF 170 KTS AT 4000 FT. WE WERE THEN ADVISED BY ATC, 'ACFT X CHANGE IN PLAN, TURN R 360 DEGS.' MOMENTS LATER WE NOTICED TFC (MD88) ON FINAL FOR RWY 26R, VISUALLY, AND ON TCASII TO OUR R DSNDING ON GS THROUGH 4600 FT, FOLLOWED BY A TA, AT WHICH POINT WE DSNDED TO 3000 FT. THE MD88 FLEW DIRECTLY OVERHEAD AT APPROX 4200 FT. ZTL CAME ON THE RADIO AND SAID, 'ACFT X, I THINK YOU'RE FOLLOWING THE WRONG ACFT.' AT WHICH TIME I ADVISED WE WERE 'TOLD TO FLY A 360 DEG HDG.' ATC CAME BACK AND SAID, 'I THINK I GOT THE WRONG CALL SIGN,' AND APOLOGIZED. WE WERE THEN VECTORED BACK AROUND FOR ANOTHER APCH TO RWY 27L. ATL APCH AND TWR WERE CALLED WHEN I GOT TO THE GATE.
