Narrative:
Normal descent into lax on pdz 3 arrival. Held up over pdz (16 mins). Originally cleared to expect ILS runway 25L, requested runway 24R. At pdz cleared for pdz 3 arrival. Asked first officer to set ILS runway 24R in FMS, but do not execute. First officer executed ILS runway 24R which eliminated pdz 3 arrival from FMS. Rapid descent in progress to make altitude restrs on STAR. Switched to raw data to monitor progress, crossed arnes/trese/supay/mitts above 11000 ft. Intercepted runway 24R localizer for normal approach and landing. First officer and I talked (on ground) about use of FMS on arrival and use of raw data preset backup at all times for arrs. Reliance on FMS data alone is but a finger stroke away from non data and at that point there is no time to reload the approach. No traffic conflict and no unusual action taken.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 ALTDEV ARR LAX.
Narrative: NORMAL DSCNT INTO LAX ON PDZ 3 ARR. HELD UP OVER PDZ (16 MINS). ORIGINALLY CLRED TO EXPECT ILS RWY 25L, REQUESTED RWY 24R. AT PDZ CLRED FOR PDZ 3 ARR. ASKED FO TO SET ILS RWY 24R IN FMS, BUT DO NOT EXECUTE. FO EXECUTED ILS RWY 24R WHICH ELIMINATED PDZ 3 ARR FROM FMS. RAPID DSCNT IN PROGRESS TO MAKE ALT RESTRS ON STAR. SWITCHED TO RAW DATA TO MONITOR PROGRESS, CROSSED ARNES/TRESE/SUPAY/MITTS ABOVE 11000 FT. INTERCEPTED RWY 24R LOC FOR NORMAL APCH AND LNDG. FO AND I TALKED (ON GND) ABOUT USE OF FMS ON ARR AND USE OF RAW DATA PRESET BACKUP AT ALL TIMES FOR ARRS. RELIANCE ON FMS DATA ALONE IS BUT A FINGER STROKE AWAY FROM NON DATA AND AT THAT POINT THERE IS NO TIME TO RELOAD THE APCH. NO TFC CONFLICT AND NO UNUSUAL ACTION TAKEN.
