Narrative:
On departure (colin 1) from ric-jfk, the crew thought and read back 'climb and maintain 4000 ft.' at 3400 ft ATC asked for our altitude, because opposite aircraft was descending through 4000 ft. The departure called for a climb to 3000 ft, but we thought 4000 ft en route to 15000 ft. ATC has to pay attention to readbacks, to complete the checks and balance. Supplemental information from acn 448677: we put in the wrong departure altitude of 4000 ft in which it should have been 3000 ft. This was the result of both pilots not reviewing thoroughly the SID. Richmond departure advised us at 3600 ft we were climbing to the wrong altitude.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A BA4100 FLC OVERSHOOTS ITS ASSIGNED ALT AND EXPERIENCES A TFC CONFLICT WITH DSNDING, OPPOSITE DIRECTION TFC 12 MI NE OF RIC, VA.
Narrative: ON DEP (COLIN 1) FROM RIC-JFK, THE CREW THOUGHT AND READ BACK 'CLB AND MAINTAIN 4000 FT.' AT 3400 FT ATC ASKED FOR OUR ALT, BECAUSE OPPOSITE ACFT WAS DSNDING THROUGH 4000 FT. THE DEP CALLED FOR A CLB TO 3000 FT, BUT WE THOUGHT 4000 FT ENRTE TO 15000 FT. ATC HAS TO PAY ATTN TO READBACKS, TO COMPLETE THE CHKS AND BAL. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 448677: WE PUT IN THE WRONG DEP ALT OF 4000 FT IN WHICH IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN 3000 FT. THIS WAS THE RESULT OF BOTH PLTS NOT REVIEWING THOROUGHLY THE SID. RICHMOND DEP ADVISED US AT 3600 FT WE WERE CLBING TO THE WRONG ALT.
