Narrative:
Well, I was just outside of omaha airspace still in contact with omaha departure control. I thought since I was out of controled airspace that radar contact was terminated, and I contacted columbus radio (FSS) and opened my flight plan on file and asked for ZMP. I then contacted ZMP and they told me that I was supposed to stay with oma departure until they terminated my radar. I went back to oma departure and about 5 mins later they told me to contact lincoln approach, so I did so, and was then turned over to ZMP for flight following back to kearney. Being inexperienced in controled airspace made me unaware that I am in radar contact even when I am out of controled airspace and I should stay with them until they hand me off. I won't make that dumb mistake again.

Narrative: WELL, I WAS JUST OUTSIDE OF OMAHA AIRSPACE STILL IN CONTACT WITH OMAHA DEP CTL. I THOUGHT SINCE I WAS OUT OF CTLED AIRSPACE THAT RADAR CONTACT WAS TERMINATED, AND I CONTACTED COLUMBUS RADIO (FSS) AND OPENED MY FLT PLAN ON FILE AND ASKED FOR ZMP. I THEN CONTACTED ZMP AND THEY TOLD ME THAT I WAS SUPPOSED TO STAY WITH OMA DEP UNTIL THEY TERMINATED MY RADAR. I WENT BACK TO OMA DEP AND ABOUT 5 MINS LATER THEY TOLD ME TO CONTACT LINCOLN APCH, SO I DID SO, AND WAS THEN TURNED OVER TO ZMP FOR FLT FOLLOWING BACK TO KEARNEY. BEING INEXPERIENCED IN CTLED AIRSPACE MADE ME UNAWARE THAT I AM IN RADAR CONTACT EVEN WHEN I AM OUT OF CTLED AIRSPACE AND I SHOULD STAY WITH THEM UNTIL THEY HAND ME OFF. I WON'T MAKE THAT DUMB MISTAKE AGAIN.
