Narrative:
A temporary runway 10/28 is in use at atl. We were told to go into position and hold on runway 10 in atl. Good communications, so far, on VHF communication radio #1. In position we were unable to receive atl tower on frequency 119.1 with VHF communication #1 (our normal ATC radio per company procedure). After 2 mins or so in position, we realized we were hearing other aircraft, but not tower. We switched to VHF #2 communication, and received takeoff clearance. This is a brand new (2 week old) aircraft delivered from boeing. Our airline is working with boeing to change antenna position for VHF communication #1 on these aircraft, as this apparently was not an isolated incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A BRAND NEW B737-800 LOST HEARING TWR FOR 2 MINS AFTER HOLDING IN POS FOR TKOF DUE TO THE INABILITY OF COM #1 RADIO TO RECEIVE. AFTER SWITCHING TO COM #2 THEY COULD HEAR TWR OK.
Narrative: A TEMPORARY RWY 10/28 IS IN USE AT ATL. WE WERE TOLD TO GO INTO POS AND HOLD ON RWY 10 IN ATL. GOOD COMS, SO FAR, ON VHF COM RADIO #1. IN POS WE WERE UNABLE TO RECEIVE ATL TWR ON FREQ 119.1 WITH VHF COM #1 (OUR NORMAL ATC RADIO PER COMPANY PROC). AFTER 2 MINS OR SO IN POS, WE REALIZED WE WERE HEARING OTHER ACFT, BUT NOT TWR. WE SWITCHED TO VHF #2 COM, AND RECEIVED TKOF CLRNC. THIS IS A BRAND NEW (2 WK OLD) ACFT DELIVERED FROM BOEING. OUR AIRLINE IS WORKING WITH BOEING TO CHANGE ANTENNA POS FOR VHF COM #1 ON THESE ACFT, AS THIS APPARENTLY WAS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT.
