Narrative:
Local flight to check the operation of avionics, which had been returned to the factory for operations check and the retractable landing gear, which had recently given problems with the electrical actuating circuits. Flew from las cru to 5t6. Landed on runway 10 at 5t6. Touchdown relatively smooth and start of rollout ok. Then nose began to oscillate. Put pressure on rudder pedals which should stop the oscillation. Aircraft swerved hard left departing the runway and coming to a halt about 200 ft north of the runway. Damage to landing gear, flaps and belly fabric (bellanca 17-30A). This happened once previously, but on a wider runway, and the left turn was recovered before leaving the pavement. The nose oscillation has occurred other times, but usually pressure on the rudder pedals will stop it.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RWY EXCURSION EXPERIENCED BY AN ATP PLT FLYING HIS BELLANCA INTO 5T6, NM.
Narrative: LCL FLT TO CHK THE OP OF AVIONICS, WHICH HAD BEEN RETURNED TO THE FACTORY FOR OPS CHK AND THE RETRACTABLE LNDG GEAR, WHICH HAD RECENTLY GIVEN PROBS WITH THE ELECTRICAL ACTUATING CIRCUITS. FLEW FROM LAS CRU TO 5T6. LANDED ON RWY 10 AT 5T6. TOUCHDOWN RELATIVELY SMOOTH AND START OF ROLLOUT OK. THEN NOSE BEGAN TO OSCILLATE. PUT PRESSURE ON RUDDER PEDALS WHICH SHOULD STOP THE OSCILLATION. ACFT SWERVED HARD L DEPARTING THE RWY AND COMING TO A HALT ABOUT 200 FT N OF THE RWY. DAMAGE TO LNDG GEAR, FLAPS AND BELLY FABRIC (BELLANCA 17-30A). THIS HAPPENED ONCE PREVIOUSLY, BUT ON A WIDER RWY, AND THE L TURN WAS RECOVERED BEFORE LEAVING THE PAVEMENT. THE NOSE OSCILLATION HAS OCCURRED OTHER TIMES, BUT USUALLY PRESSURE ON THE RUDDER PEDALS WILL STOP IT.
