Narrative:

On taxi out at ord, first time to ord. Had briefed myself and copilot on taxi procedures and route to use. Got progressive from ground. It was early and almost no activity. Taxied from ramp via taxiway D and taxiway D1 then taxiway B. Over taxiway B bridge to runway 32R, failed to find runway hold lines. Neither my copilot nor I saw any hold lines. We stopped at what appeared to be the end of the runway with taxi lines to numbers. On call-up to tower, we were told position and hold and then cleared for takeoff. I'm not sure we weren't where we were supposed to be and there appeared to be no problem from the controller's end. I, however, am not sure where the hold position is for that runway and was very concerned about a possible runway incursion by our aircraft. The only possibility I came up with in hindsight was the hold lines were right on the other side of the bridge and I missed them because I distinctly remember the 'do not stop on bridge' signs. Hopefully, next time I go that route, I'll have less difficulty. Even when being diligent, things can go wrong. After the flight, I reviewed a sep/99 article on runway incursions. We followed their recommendations. Obviously, daylight and familiarity will help alleviate this problem -- 2 luxuries we didn't have this time.

Title: A BE20 PIC FEELS THAT HE MAY HAVE CROSSED OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINES FOR RWY 32R AT ORD, IL.

Narrative: ON TAXI OUT AT ORD, FIRST TIME TO ORD. HAD BRIEFED MYSELF AND COPLT ON TAXI PROCS AND RTE TO USE. GOT PROGRESSIVE FROM GND. IT WAS EARLY AND ALMOST NO ACTIVITY. TAXIED FROM RAMP VIA TXWY D AND TXWY D1 THEN TXWY B. OVER TXWY B BRIDGE TO RWY 32R, FAILED TO FIND RWY HOLD LINES. NEITHER MY COPLT NOR I SAW ANY HOLD LINES. WE STOPPED AT WHAT APPEARED TO BE THE END OF THE RWY WITH TAXI LINES TO NUMBERS. ON CALL-UP TO TWR, WE WERE TOLD POS AND HOLD AND THEN CLRED FOR TKOF. I'M NOT SURE WE WEREN'T WHERE WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE AND THERE APPEARED TO BE NO PROB FROM THE CTLR'S END. I, HOWEVER, AM NOT SURE WHERE THE HOLD POS IS FOR THAT RWY AND WAS VERY CONCERNED ABOUT A POSSIBLE RWY INCURSION BY OUR ACFT. THE ONLY POSSIBILITY I CAME UP WITH IN HINDSIGHT WAS THE HOLD LINES WERE RIGHT ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BRIDGE AND I MISSED THEM BECAUSE I DISTINCTLY REMEMBER THE 'DO NOT STOP ON BRIDGE' SIGNS. HOPEFULLY, NEXT TIME I GO THAT RTE, I'LL HAVE LESS DIFFICULTY. EVEN WHEN BEING DILIGENT, THINGS CAN GO WRONG. AFTER THE FLT, I REVIEWED A SEP/99 ARTICLE ON RWY INCURSIONS. WE FOLLOWED THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS. OBVIOUSLY, DAYLIGHT AND FAMILIARITY WILL HELP ALLEVIATE THIS PROB -- 2 LUXURIES WE DIDN'T HAVE THIS TIME.
