Narrative:
The aircraft was leveled at FL350. Airspace deteriorated slowly due to turbulence and throttles set at insufficient power. Aircraft got behind power curve due to heavy gross weight at high altitude. Full power would not maintain altitude. Aircraft descended before clearance could be obtained from ATC for lower altitude. Clearance obtained after descending approximately 570 ft. Should have noticed airspeed falling sooner. Supplemental information from acn 450311: due to frequency change and congestion, clearance was not received until aircraft was in slow descent.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN L1011 FLC IS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN THEIR ASSIGNED ALT OF FL350 WHILE E OF MEM, TN.
Narrative: THE ACFT WAS LEVELED AT FL350. AIRSPACE DETERIORATED SLOWLY DUE TO TURB AND THROTTLES SET AT INSUFFICIENT PWR. ACFT GOT BEHIND PWR CURVE DUE TO HVY GROSS WT AT HIGH ALT. FULL PWR WOULD NOT MAINTAIN ALT. ACFT DSNDED BEFORE CLRNC COULD BE OBTAINED FROM ATC FOR LOWER ALT. CLRNC OBTAINED AFTER DSNDING APPROX 570 FT. SHOULD HAVE NOTICED AIRSPD FALLING SOONER. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 450311: DUE TO FREQ CHANGE AND CONGESTION, CLRNC WAS NOT RECEIVED UNTIL ACFT WAS IN SLOW DSCNT.
