Narrative:
IFR departure (bette 2), pre departure clearance directed fly heading 110 degrees on departure. Several preceding aircraft were assigned heading 155 degrees after takeoff from runway 13R by jfk tower. Captain assumed we would also be assigned 155 degrees after takeoff. He changed heading in MCP to 155 degrees before takeoff. After takeoff, he commanded 'heading select' on flight director and started right turn toward 155 degrees at 400 ft. Heading was approximately 140 degrees when jfk tower directed, 'fly heading 110 degrees.' captain turned left to 110 degrees. We were never specifically cleared or assigned heading 155 degrees and should not have assumed we were going to get it. Should have flown what we were cleared, and 'ask' if there is any confusion.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B767 FLC ASSUMED THEY WOULD RECEIVE A HDG AND FAILED TO FLY THE CLRED DEP RTE FROM JFK.
Narrative: IFR DEP (BETTE 2), PDC DIRECTED FLY HDG 110 DEGS ON DEP. SEVERAL PRECEDING ACFT WERE ASSIGNED HDG 155 DEGS AFTER TKOF FROM RWY 13R BY JFK TWR. CAPT ASSUMED WE WOULD ALSO BE ASSIGNED 155 DEGS AFTER TKOF. HE CHANGED HDG IN MCP TO 155 DEGS BEFORE TKOF. AFTER TKOF, HE COMMANDED 'HDG SELECT' ON FLT DIRECTOR AND STARTED R TURN TOWARD 155 DEGS AT 400 FT. HDG WAS APPROX 140 DEGS WHEN JFK TWR DIRECTED, 'FLY HDG 110 DEGS.' CAPT TURNED L TO 110 DEGS. WE WERE NEVER SPECIFICALLY CLRED OR ASSIGNED HDG 155 DEGS AND SHOULD NOT HAVE ASSUMED WE WERE GOING TO GET IT. SHOULD HAVE FLOWN WHAT WE WERE CLRED, AND 'ASK' IF THERE IS ANY CONFUSION.
