Narrative:
A malfunction of the main cabin cargo door lock indicating system was discovered. With the main cabin cargo door full open the forward door lock indicated locked the light was extinguished. The control panel lights were tested and the light check good. Maintenance dmi'ed the malfunction and a visual check was conducted as per the MEL. After take off the reference was checked in greater detail and was found to be improper for the type of malfunction. The crew felt the door was safe to continue the flight but believe the flight should not have departed because the MEL reference stated that a visual inspection should be made but only if the filament had failed (L1011 MEL 52-72-00 step 6). The malfunction should have been corrected prior to flight.

Title: AN L1011 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH THE MAIN CABIN CARGO DOOR WARNING DEFERRED AS INOP IN CONFLICT WITH THE MEL.
Narrative: A MALFUNCTION OF THE MAIN CABIN CARGO DOOR LOCK INDICATING SYS WAS DISCOVERED. WITH THE MAIN CABIN CARGO DOOR FULL OPEN THE FORWARD DOOR LOCK INDICATED LOCKED THE LIGHT WAS EXTINGUISHED. THE CTL PANEL LIGHTS WERE TESTED AND THE LIGHT CHK GOOD. MAINT DMI'ED THE MALFUNCTION AND A VISUAL CHK WAS CONDUCTED AS PER THE MEL. AFTER TAKE OFF THE REF WAS CHKED IN GREATER DETAIL AND WAS FOUND TO BE IMPROPER FOR THE TYPE OF MALFUNCTION. THE CREW FELT THE DOOR WAS SAFE TO CONTINUE THE FLT BUT BELIEVE THE FLT SHOULD NOT HAVE DEPARTED BECAUSE THE MEL REF STATED THAT A VISUAL INSPECTION SHOULD BE MADE BUT ONLY IF THE FILAMENT HAD FAILED (L1011 MEL 52-72-00 STEP 6). THE MALFUNCTION SHOULD HAVE BEEN CORRECTED PRIOR TO FLT.
