Narrative:
On taxi into gate ax at stl air carrier X ramp I lined up on initial lead in line called for flaps up/slats retract and challenged 'clear right' to first officer. Clearing left myself and acquiring sight of the mechanic that marshal aircraft in gate, I followed marshalling signals from mechanic. This gate requires a 80 degree right turn in tight quarters to the final lead in line. After following mechanic signals on to this final lead in line the aircraft shuddered and yawed about 15 ft from stop line. I applied full brakes and parked them asking first officer 'what was that.' first officer said maybe we hit a chock. Mechanic was still signaling forward. I challenged first officer to look right and I opened my clear view window to look left. Then I saw the wing had struck a deice truck leading edge to side corner. Mechanic came on interphone and I asked what happened. He replied 'wing hit deicer truck.' I asked how that happened and he replied 'I didn't see it.' I called for tug and shut down engine running. Tug pulled us into gate after deice truck was moved. Secure cockpit check accomplished and logbook write-up describing damage entered.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR DC9-30 WING STRIKES A DEICING TRUCK DURING GATE PARKING CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE L WING. MARSHALLER WAS STILL MOTIONING THE CAPT AHEAD WHEN THE WING COLLIDED WITH THE TRUCK.
Narrative: ON TAXI INTO GATE AX AT STL ACR X RAMP I LINED UP ON INITIAL LEAD IN LINE CALLED FOR FLAPS UP/SLATS RETRACT AND CHALLENGED 'CLR R' TO FO. CLRING L MYSELF AND ACQUIRING SIGHT OF THE MECH THAT MARSHAL ACFT IN GATE, I FOLLOWED MARSHALLING SIGNALS FROM MECH. THIS GATE REQUIRES A 80 DEG R TURN IN TIGHT QUARTERS TO THE FINAL LEAD IN LINE. AFTER FOLLOWING MECH SIGNALS ON TO THIS FINAL LEAD IN LINE THE ACFT SHUDDERED AND YAWED ABOUT 15 FT FROM STOP LINE. I APPLIED FULL BRAKES AND PARKED THEM ASKING FO 'WHAT WAS THAT.' FO SAID MAYBE WE HIT A CHOCK. MECH WAS STILL SIGNALING FORWARD. I CHALLENGED FO TO LOOK R AND I OPENED MY CLR VIEW WINDOW TO LOOK L. THEN I SAW THE WING HAD STRUCK A DEICE TRUCK LEADING EDGE TO SIDE CORNER. MECH CAME ON INTERPHONE AND I ASKED WHAT HAPPENED. HE REPLIED 'WING HIT DEICER TRUCK.' I ASKED HOW THAT HAPPENED AND HE REPLIED 'I DIDN'T SEE IT.' I CALLED FOR TUG AND SHUT DOWN ENG RUNNING. TUG PULLED US INTO GATE AFTER DEICE TRUCK WAS MOVED. SECURE COCKPIT CHK ACCOMPLISHED AND LOGBOOK WRITE-UP DESCRIBING DAMAGE ENTERED.
