Narrative:
Aircraft X was climbing from sns to sac, climbing to 6500 ft. Radar advisories from mry departure initially with handoff to bay approach. Bay was very busy and there may have been confusion on the frequency (similar and incomplete call signs used). Did not hear any traffic calls until controller shouted 'aircraft X turn right immediately to 040 degrees' (from heading of 345 degrees). Aircraft Y was behind and above and it turned away but the controller's turn command turned us directly into path of aircraft Y. Aircraft Y was descending for sjc and was above aircraft X. Recommendations: 1) call out full call signs. 2) approach should turn traffic away from each other. 3) slower traffic that is below and in front of faster traffic can't see the overtaking faster traffic (especially in a high wing old style cessna) and should be treated to a wider separation margin by approach.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CESSNA USING VFR ADVISORIES GIVEN A TURN INTO ACR'S PATH BY APCH CTL. BOTH ACFT TOOK EVASIVE ACTION.
Narrative: ACFT X WAS CLBING FROM SNS TO SAC, CLBING TO 6500 FT. RADAR ADVISORIES FROM MRY DEP INITIALLY WITH HDOF TO BAY APCH. BAY WAS VERY BUSY AND THERE MAY HAVE BEEN CONFUSION ON THE FREQ (SIMILAR AND INCOMPLETE CALL SIGNS USED). DID NOT HEAR ANY TFC CALLS UNTIL CTLR SHOUTED 'ACFT X TURN R IMMEDIATELY TO 040 DEGS' (FROM HDG OF 345 DEGS). ACFT Y WAS BEHIND AND ABOVE AND IT TURNED AWAY BUT THE CTLR'S TURN COMMAND TURNED US DIRECTLY INTO PATH OF ACFT Y. ACFT Y WAS DSNDING FOR SJC AND WAS ABOVE ACFT X. RECOMMENDATIONS: 1) CALL OUT FULL CALL SIGNS. 2) APCH SHOULD TURN TFC AWAY FROM EACH OTHER. 3) SLOWER TFC THAT IS BELOW AND IN FRONT OF FASTER TFC CAN'T SEE THE OVERTAKING FASTER TFC (ESPECIALLY IN A HIGH WING OLD STYLE CESSNA) AND SHOULD BE TREATED TO A WIDER SEPARATION MARGIN BY APCH.
