Narrative:
We were cleared for ILS runway 36 circle runway 31. We called the field in sight and I began to circle right. After overshooting the runway centerline for runway 31, we asked for runway 13 and I circled and lined up on short final when the tower controller said 'you're lined up for runway 18, but you're cleared to land runway 18.' we continued and made a normal landing. The controller said runway 18 was also being used as an active but they were trying to use it as little as possible due to noise abatement. Our situational awareness at that time was not like it should have been. We should have flown the route at a slower speed and taken more time to brief the approach and become more familiar with the environment.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AFTER AN ILS APCH ACR CIRCLES TO LAND BUT FINDS INCORRECT RWY AND LANDS ON IT WITH CLRNC FROM TWR.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR ILS RWY 36 CIRCLE RWY 31. WE CALLED THE FIELD IN SIGHT AND I BEGAN TO CIRCLE R. AFTER OVERSHOOTING THE RWY CTRLINE FOR RWY 31, WE ASKED FOR RWY 13 AND I CIRCLED AND LINED UP ON SHORT FINAL WHEN THE TWR CTLR SAID 'YOU'RE LINED UP FOR RWY 18, BUT YOU'RE CLRED TO LAND RWY 18.' WE CONTINUED AND MADE A NORMAL LNDG. THE CTLR SAID RWY 18 WAS ALSO BEING USED AS AN ACTIVE BUT THEY WERE TRYING TO USE IT AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE DUE TO NOISE ABATEMENT. OUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS AT THAT TIME WAS NOT LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. WE SHOULD HAVE FLOWN THE RTE AT A SLOWER SPD AND TAKEN MORE TIME TO BRIEF THE APCH AND BECOME MORE FAMILIAR WITH THE ENVIRONMENT.
