Narrative:
Killeen has a flight school, and also is a stop for scheduled acrs. It is an uncontrolled field with unicom and an east traffic pattern for both runway 1 and runway 19 because of military traffic to the west. It also has a short runway with displaced threshold. On a flight from dfw to ile, I was instructor pilot giving IOE instruction to a new first officer. There was touch-and-go traffic at the field. Student had trouble locating the field, and got us into a potential conflict with traffic on downwind. To avoid the cessna, we had to break off and overfly approach end to circle in from the west. On student's approach, we were high and fast resulting in excessive float. Past the touchdown zone and still airborne, I called for go around. As we climbed out, student could not locate previous touch-and-go traffic on that side. I saw the cessna in a conflict position to our right, so we initiated a climbing left turn to avoid. That put us in a left traffic pattern for runway 1. Third approach was successful. In my opinion, scheduled carriers have no business going into an uncontrolled airport with a short runway, heavy civilian training in low speed aircraft on one side and military aircraft activity on the other.

Title: A SAAB 340 FLC HAD AN NMAC IN THE TFC PATTERN AT ILE.
Narrative: KILLEEN HAS A FLT SCHOOL, AND ALSO IS A STOP FOR SCHEDULED ACRS. IT IS AN UNCTLED FIELD WITH UNICOM AND AN E TFC PATTERN FOR BOTH RWY 1 AND RWY 19 BECAUSE OF MIL TFC TO THE W. IT ALSO HAS A SHORT RWY WITH DISPLACED THRESHOLD. ON A FLT FROM DFW TO ILE, I WAS INSTRUCTOR PLT GIVING IOE INSTRUCTION TO A NEW FO. THERE WAS TOUCH-AND-GO TFC AT THE FIELD. STUDENT HAD TROUBLE LOCATING THE FIELD, AND GOT US INTO A POTENTIAL CONFLICT WITH TFC ON DOWNWIND. TO AVOID THE CESSNA, WE HAD TO BREAK OFF AND OVERFLY APCH END TO CIRCLE IN FROM THE W. ON STUDENT'S APCH, WE WERE HIGH AND FAST RESULTING IN EXCESSIVE FLOAT. PAST THE TOUCHDOWN ZONE AND STILL AIRBORNE, I CALLED FOR GAR. AS WE CLBED OUT, STUDENT COULD NOT LOCATE PREVIOUS TOUCH-AND-GO TFC ON THAT SIDE. I SAW THE CESSNA IN A CONFLICT POS TO OUR R, SO WE INITIATED A CLBING L TURN TO AVOID. THAT PUT US IN A L TFC PATTERN FOR RWY 1. THIRD APCH WAS SUCCESSFUL. IN MY OPINION, SCHEDULED CARRIERS HAVE NO BUSINESS GOING INTO AN UNCTLED ARPT WITH A SHORT RWY, HVY CIVILIAN TRAINING IN LOW SPD ACFT ON ONE SIDE AND MIL ACFT ACTIVITY ON THE OTHER.
