Narrative:

On oct/xa/99 at approximately XA45 in the area of naples airport, acting as sic on a learjet 25B, the captain began a turn from right base to final for runway 5 (gear down, flaps 20 degrees, approximately 1100 ft) when a flock of about 20 birds (white) were observed directly in front of the aircraft. With no time to react, the aircraft struck the flock of birds. The left engine (#1) was observed with a loss of power. The captain secured the engine and maintained approximately 120 KTS (4800 pounds fuel, 2 crew). The captain immediately called for gear up flaps up and we requested vectors to runway 14 where we landed without further incident. The following persons were informed: insurance, director of operations, director of maintenance, and NTSB.
