Narrative:
During flight from iam to pit, first officer left the cockpit to go to the lavatory. During this time, we were given a descent clearance from our cruise altitude of FL330 to cross 155 mi southwest of air at FL290. I thought the clearance was to cross at FL240 and wrote it down as such. While descending through FL280, center asked what our assigned altitude was. When I replied FL240, I was told that it was FL290. We were told that we could stop the descent and maintain FL280. Controller said that it was not a problem that there was no conflicting traffic.
