Narrative:
I was PF. Had been given a heading direct roseburg VOR when able. I was eating dinner. Captain handling radio. When I was initially given the vector for rbg we were out of reception range. Aircraft was on heading select. When I finished dinner I realized we were 15 mi northwest of the VOR, when we should have picked up the VOR many mi earlier and tracked direct to it. I totally messed up and have no excuse. I allowed talking and eating dinner to distract me from noticing that the VOR was identifiable and had come alive and we should have been tracking it. I informed the captain and he told ATC that we were correcting back to the east. ATC gave us a heading for pye for the arrival and flight continued without incident. I think, in the future, it may be a good idea to xfer roles to PNF whilst eating because when the pilot moves the seat back to eat on the MD80, the HSI is completely obscured by the control column.
