Narrative:

In an attempt to not delay departure, I told first officer that I would look at logbook after pushback. While we were pushing back, we received an ACARS message that there was an open write-up and once the engine starts were completed, we pulled back in to the gate and had maintenance defer the item. I would have certainly caught the write-up upon looking at the logbook, however, to prevent a recurrence, I am changing my procedure to make sure it is done before pushback. There is supposed to be a safety net which did not work either -- the gate agent was unaware of the write-up, the dispatcher was unaware of it as I was discussing WX with him, and the first officer did not catch it either.
