Narrative:

Prior to departure, we contacted ground control for taxi clearance. We were issued approximately the following: 'taxi via taxiway D to runway 8R, hold short of taxiway south.' at sky harbor airport (phoenix), extensive construction is underway which has resulted in numerous changes in taxiway configns. Previously, taxiway D was a short parallel taxiway to a primary runway 8R/26L. Taxiway D ended at txwys south and T, 2 parallel north-south txwys. Since completion of construction, taxiway D now has been extended the full length of runway 8R/26L. As we approached taxiway south while taxiing on taxiway D, I slowed the aircraft to a stop. At this point, ground control advised us to 'continue taxiing.' out of habit, I made a short turn to taxiway east, which has always been the primary taxi route to runway 8R from our particular gates. This was the first time I had used runway 8R since the new taxiway confign. Now, taxiway D was a full length taxiway to runway 8R just like taxiway east. At this point ground control notified us that we were not cleared to use taxiway east. We acknowledged our mistake and then were issued a subsequent clearance to taxi via taxiway east to runway 8R. No traffic conflict had occurred.

Title: A B737-300 CAPT, TAXIING AT PHX, TURNED FROM TXWY D TO TXWY E, OUT OF HABIT, NOT REALIZING THAT HE SHOULD HAVE REMAINED ON TXWY D AS IT HAD JUST BEEN ALTERED TO RUN THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF RWY 8R-26L.

WE ACKNOWLEDGED OUR MISTAKE AND THEN WERE ISSUED A SUBSEQUENT CLRNC TO TAXI VIA TXWY E TO RWY 8R. NO TFC CONFLICT HAD OCCURRED.
