Narrative:

On climb out from day, oh, at approximately 14000 ft, we smelled electrical smoke and saw a light wisp of smoke coming from behind the flight engineer panel on the left side. The first officer continued flying the aircraft while the captain requested an immediate descent for landing at cvg or day. ATC complied with a clearance for descent to land at cvg airport. Captain and flight engineer began 'electrical smoke or fire' procedures checklist. There was never any thick smoke, and it seemed to dissipate by landing. Because of the urgency of the situation, and the close proximity of cvg, we were on the ground in less than 10 mins. Emergency equipment and fire department personnel were on hand for the landing, and boarded the aircraft to verify no fire or further smoke. Maintenance personnel later determined that a wire to a fuel boost pump had arched and burned some of the insulation around the wire due to the heat. Supplemental information from acn 455781: the crew donned oxygen masks. Good CRM was employed throughout the situation by all involved, including ATC and rescue personnel.

Title: B727 CREW HAS SMOKE IN COCKPIT.

Narrative: ON CLBOUT FROM DAY, OH, AT APPROX 14000 FT, WE SMELLED ELECTRICAL SMOKE AND SAW A LIGHT WISP OF SMOKE COMING FROM BEHIND THE FE PANEL ON THE L SIDE. THE FO CONTINUED FLYING THE ACFT WHILE THE CAPT REQUESTED AN IMMEDIATE DSCNT FOR LNDG AT CVG OR DAY. ATC COMPLIED WITH A CLRNC FOR DSCNT TO LAND AT CVG ARPT. CAPT AND FE BEGAN 'ELECTRICAL SMOKE OR FIRE' PROCS CHKLIST. THERE WAS NEVER ANY THICK SMOKE, AND IT SEEMED TO DISSIPATE BY LNDG. BECAUSE OF THE URGENCY OF THE SIT, AND THE CLOSE PROX OF CVG, WE WERE ON THE GND IN LESS THAN 10 MINS. EMER EQUIP AND FIRE DEPT PERSONNEL WERE ON HAND FOR THE LNDG, AND BOARDED THE ACFT TO VERIFY NO FIRE OR FURTHER SMOKE. MAINT PERSONNEL LATER DETERMINED THAT A WIRE TO A FUEL BOOST PUMP HAD ARCHED AND BURNED SOME OF THE INSULATION AROUND THE WIRE DUE TO THE HEAT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 455781: THE CREW DONNED OXYGEN MASKS. GOOD CRM WAS EMPLOYED THROUGHOUT THE SIT BY ALL INVOLVED, INCLUDING ATC AND RESCUE PERSONNEL.
