Narrative:
ATC issued descent clearance to 13000 ft from FL210. Upon crossing or just prior to crossing somto intersection at 13000 ft, controller states 'confirm crossing somto at 13000 ft.' I said 'negative, just descending to 13000 ft.' he then issued another descent to cross 5 mi north of ard at 11000 ft. We complied. Apparently the controller thought he issued somto at 13000 ft or he did issue it and I thought it was just a descent clearance to 13000 ft with no restrs. Don't really know for sure. IOE training was being given in the cockpit and distrs may have occurred in the discussion of descent modes of the airbus.

Title: CAPT OF AN AIRBUS 320 FAILED TO MAKE XING RESTR ON DSCNT DUE TO A MISUNDERSTANDING OF CLRNC.
Narrative: ATC ISSUED DSCNT CLRNC TO 13000 FT FROM FL210. UPON XING OR JUST PRIOR TO XING SOMTO INTXN AT 13000 FT, CTLR STATES 'CONFIRM XING SOMTO AT 13000 FT.' I SAID 'NEGATIVE, JUST DSNDING TO 13000 FT.' HE THEN ISSUED ANOTHER DSCNT TO CROSS 5 MI N OF ARD AT 11000 FT. WE COMPLIED. APPARENTLY THE CTLR THOUGHT HE ISSUED SOMTO AT 13000 FT OR HE DID ISSUE IT AND I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST A DSCNT CLRNC TO 13000 FT WITH NO RESTRS. DON'T REALLY KNOW FOR SURE. IOE TRAINING WAS BEING GIVEN IN THE COCKPIT AND DISTRS MAY HAVE OCCURRED IN THE DISCUSSION OF DSCNT MODES OF THE AIRBUS.
