Narrative:
During climb after takeoff, the flight engineer noted a low 'a' system hydraulic light on and low quantity on gauge. As per aircraft operations manual, we declared an emergency, manually lowered the flaps and gear. We returned to airport and landed with no difficulties. Had the gear pinned and towed in. The mechanics told us that the flap actuator had a leak.

Narrative: DURING CLB AFTER TKOF, THE FE NOTED A LOW 'A' SYS HYD LIGHT ON AND LOW QUANTITY ON GAUGE. AS PER ACFT OPS MANUAL, WE DECLARED AN EMER, MANUALLY LOWERED THE FLAPS AND GEAR. WE RETURNED TO ARPT AND LANDED WITH NO DIFFICULTIES. HAD THE GEAR PINNED AND TOWED IN. THE MECHS TOLD US THAT THE FLAP ACTUATOR HAD A LEAK.
